Kitten season can be the ideal time to welcome a new furry friend as there are always new kittens in need of loving homes. When you adopt, you give a cat in need a second chance at life, prevent overpopulation, and directly support rescue organizations like Twitchy Tails in our vital work. Finding your other half can also save a life!

Consider fostering during kitten season and give a kitten or cat a temporary home before they’re adopted. We have kittens and cats of all ages in need of a loving foster home, and Twitchy Tails provides all supplies and veterinary care. Take a look at our page: fostering information

We have many volunteer positions available, please apply here: volunteer application form

What is kitten season?

Kitten season is what we in the rescue community affectionately call the seasonal increase in kittens being born, typically occurring in the warmer months every year.

Shelters and rescues begin to see an influx  or ‘baby boom’ of kittens and pregnant mother cats starting in the early spring and lasting until fall or even early winter.

Female cats can become pregnant at only four months old, carry their kittens for only two months, and have an average of 4-6 kittens per litter. That’s a lot of kittens!

Kitten season is a challenge as we work to take in and care for the many incoming kittens that are often born outside. Once rescued, they require not just the love of a foster or family- but medical intervention like spays & neuters, vaccines, flea treatments and more.

In the case of orphaned kittens 1-4 weeks old that fully depend on their mother, fosters step in to give around the clock care to ensure their survival.

Rescuers everywhere work hard to meet the needs of the downpour of kittens and mama cats, but when facing issues like lack of space and fosters, illness, and cost- kitten season can feel more like a flood than a drizzle when resources spread thin.

Whether you donate, open your home to foster cats in need, adopt a cat, or simply spread the word, your support makes a monumental difference in the health and happiness of cats in need in the Eugene/Springfield area.
